Who is GED?
4 July 2009 - 6:07:28pm

You'll see a lot of GED-this and GED-that. GED, or GEDCOM, is used to refer to the computer file format that has been developed for genealogy. This program is written in php and designed to view information that is in GEDCOM format, so it was named phpGedView. This particular installation uses a GEDCOM file named "Largiader".

The GEDCOM format has been developed over several decades by the Mormons ‎(aka Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or LDS)‎ who have been the main pioneers in this field. More information on this can be found nearly anywhere on the web by searching for GEDCOM.
About this site
28 May 2009 - 11:26:42am

This site traces the Largiadèrs and related families as far as possible in every direction. If you are in that group, feel free to contact me ‎(Anton Largiadèr)‎ to get login information. Withot logging in, a lot of information will not be visible due to privacy restrictions.

How to use this program

There are two main ways to view information: by individual and by family. You don't ever really choose one or the other; you can jump from one to the other as you look around. Individual records contain the information about a person, and can usually be reached by clicking on the name of a person or else their record number which will look like I345. While in an individual record you can select different views, such as Tree (to see a descendancy tree), Media (to see pictures), and Close Relatives (to see relatives of older and newer generations). The Close Relatives screen is a great way to pick your way from one person to the next.

You can click on family links (looking like F42) to better see the relationships between people.

One of the most important questions this program can answer is, "How am I related to this person?" It's easy to find out as long as you are logged in: just find that other person, and from their individual record look at the "Options for Individual" menu. Under Charts you will see Relationship Chart which will be pretty self-explanatory.

However if you are not logged in, you will not be able to view the records of living people, which makes it difficult to see your own record and therefore the relationship path to yourself will not be available. Contact the administrator to get login credentials.
